GIANNI CARAVAGGIO

Gianni Caravaggio was born in 1968 in the province of Chieti, in the central of Italy, and later grew up in Germany. He graduated from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in 1994. He lives and works between Milan and the German town of Sindelfingen.
Caravaggio's art has a cosmogonic and demiurgic flavour. Sculpture is considered a "primary world" because it allows us to study the genesis of the artistic act and the way in which an image can be generated in the viewer's imagination during the encounter with the work. Starting from Arte Povera, Caravaggio reworks its language, exploring matter in its complexity by using bronze and marble, materials traditionally associated with sculptural activity. Reflection and gesture in their concreteness are seen by Caravaggio as consistent.

Over the years he held several solo exhibitions: in 2006 at the Castello di Rivoli for the Castello di Rivoli prize, in 2008 Scenario at the Maramotti Collection, in 2014 Enfin seul - finalmente solo at the Musée d’Art Modern et Contemporain de Saint-Étienne and at MAGA in Gallarate, in 2018 Iniziare un tempo at the Museo Novecento in Florence, in 2021 When Nature was Young, at the Kunstmuseum Reutlingen/Konkret in Germany, in 2023 at the GAM in Turin.
In 2002 he received the PS1 Italian Studio Program Special Fund Award, in 2005 the Castello di Rivoli Award and the Alinovi Award, in 2013 the ACACIA Award.
